At the Royal Łazienki Museum in Warsaw, provenance curator Emma Zuchowska describes the painstaking work of recovering stolen pieces, including the Bust of Diana by Jean-Antoine Houdon, identified at a Vienna auction in 2015 after it went missing more than seventy years earlier. In Ukraine, Russia’s invasion has damaged over 4,600 cultural sites since 2022, with objects looted from Kherson and displayed in Russia as reclaimed Russian heritage. Andrea Matačić Cayley of Arizona State University describes it as the first time in twenty years of war crimes prosecutions that destruction has been geared not just towards destroying property but towards erasing identity. In Kyiv, the historic Dormition Cathedral at the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, one of the oldest landmarks in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, was engulfed in flames after a Russian aerial attack, and has become a symbol of Ukrainian resilience. In Sarajevo, thirty years after the siege that burned two million books in the city’s national library, artist Kerim Hodžić is painting murals over shelling scars, covering wounds with color. And in Hungary, the ancient steppe culture festival Kurultáj in Bugac offers an unexpected window into nomadic heritage and living Uyghur traditions.
