https://video.echelon.pl/videos/watch/18d38c1d-fa75-45f1-80b8-075199a63bfc Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s announcement of the creation of a National Pantheon on Monday came amid heightened tensions with Poland over history, specifically Zelenskyy’s decision made earlier this month to name an elite military unit in honor of a World War II formation responsible for murdering some 100,000 Polish civilians. “Now Ukrainians can pursue what many have long wanted: building the narrative of their state in this new national framework,” said Stuart Dowell, TVP World’s Political Editor, adding that “Ukraine will pursue this policy regardless of its relationship with Poland. The Polish reaction is predictable, but it’s clearly considered acceptable collateral by Zelenskyy and others in the Ukrainian leadership.” Dowell noted that while “Poland was very necessary to Ukraine at the beginning of the war, less so now,” the decision to ignore Warsaw’s political sensitivities also comes amid Kyiv’s growing diplomatic confidence, which may signal a challenge for the role of the regional security leader. “The reality is more complicated. Ukraine still depends heavily on Europe for financing, military assistance and diplomatic support,” Dowell adding that “Wanting a leadership role doesn't automatically mean getting it,” and pointing out that Poland could retaliate by hampering Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations efforts, the likelihood of which will increase the more right-wing and conservative the leadership in Warsaw is.
