Every summer, the island of Wolin brings that extraordinary story back to life. The Slavs and Vikings Festival on the island of Wolin draws more than two and a half thousand reenactors and even as many as 40,000 visitors for a weekend of full-scale battles, traditional crafts and medieval life, making it one of Europe's most spectacular medieval reenactment events. But Wolin is more than just a festival destination. The island has long been linked to Jomsborg, the legendary Viking stronghold whose exact location remains one of history's great unsolved mysteries, suggesting that the Vikings came far closer to Poland than most people realize. At the festival, artisans keep centuries-old skills alive using traditional techniques to make pottery, jewellery, rope, herbal remedies and stone tools, offering visitors a genuine window into medieval daily life. Back in Warsaw, the Warsaw Rising Museum has opened Interwoven, a powerful new exhibition tracing how war transformed the way Warsaw's inhabitants dressed, from the elegance of pre-war Warsaw through the shortages of German occupation to the Warsaw Uprising itself, when clothing became a matter of survival.
