<description>A historic victory for Serbia's student movement in the country's parliamentary elections. Aleksandar Vučić has officially conceded defeat, and the incoming government now faces the difficult task of delivering real reforms. Student List emerged from a protest movement that began nearly two years ago after the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad, Serbia's second-largest city, which killed 16 people. What had initially been a public outcry over the tragedy soon turned into a broader movement against corruption, state capture, and abuses of power. “The project became a symbol of corruption and state capture,” says Paweł Trzaskowski, TVP World Balkans Correspondent, in News in Depth. Despite Serbia's vote for change, many of the people entering parliament are not career politicians. According to Trzaskowski, the movement brings together lawyers, artists, academics, and other professionals rather than established political figures. The challenge now will be transforming a protest movement into an effective governing force capable of rebuilding institutions, tackling corruption, and restoring public trust.
