Gorbachev issued an ultimatum demanding that Lithuania abandon its independence and restore the USSR constitution. Lithuania refused. On January 11, tanks rolled into Vilnius, and blood was spilled in the fight for Lithuania’s independence. 14 civilians were killed and over 140 were injured as they peacefully protested for freedom in what is known as the Vilnius massacre.
