In this special edition of Anatomy of Disinformation from the European Parliament in Brussels, host Maia Mazurkiewicz examines Europe’s new efforts to strengthen democratic resilience through the European Democracy Shield. The discussion explores foreign interference, disinformation, deepfakes, AI-generated content, cyberattacks, and the growing challenge of protecting the information space without undermining the freedoms democracies are built to defend. Michał Wawrykiewicz, Polish Member of the European Parliament from the European People’s Party, joins the conversation from the heart of the European institutions. A lawyer focused on the rule of law, democracy and human rights, he serves on the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Delegation for Relations with the United States. He is also a substitute member of the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, where he serves as vice-coordinator. Wawrykiewicz discusses how the EU is coordinating its response to foreign interference and what governments and institutions can do to detect and counter threats before they affect elections and democratic institutions. Joining him is Robert Pross, data scientist for AI Policy at CEPS, working in the organization's Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and Digital Economy Unit. Pross brings an AI and technology perspective to the debate, looking at how artificial intelligence is changing the information environment, how voters may increasingly rely on chatbots for political information, and how AI can accelerate the production and spread of misleading narratives. He also explores Europe’s dependence on foreign AI systems and the question of whether building European AI capabilities should become part of democratic resilience.
