<description>As the NATO summit in Ankara wraps up, declarations of alliance unity and support for Ukraine have been accompanied by tangible progress, most notably U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that Kyiv will receive a license to manufacture missiles for Patriot air defense systems. “Ukraine is proving itself to be an asset. (...) It’s contributing to transatlantic security,” Adam Jasser, TVP World’s News Director, said, contrasting it with earlier “woolly promises of ‘an irreversible path to NATO’. You know, empty promises, basically.” “Now, NATO is acknowledging that Ukraine has the capabilities that NATO lacks, and therefore, it's no longer a liability. It’s an asset for the alliance,” Jasser said. The cordial atmosphere of the Trump–Zelenskyy press conference contrasted sharply with their infamous Oval Office meeting in February 2024 and suggested a shift from Trump’s earlier pressure on Ukraine to accept an unfavorable peace with Russia. Has Trump changed course, or was he never aligned with Putin? “I think by now, Putin realizes that it’s not the case that he was,” TVP World’s News Director said. “Everybody was assuming that it was Putin playing Trump. (...) It’s becoming clearer and clearer that it might have been the other way around.” While Zelenskyy can celebrate success in Ankara, the European Parliament has weighed in on a dispute between Kyiv and Warsaw over history. The controversy stems from Zelenskyy’s decision last month to name an elite army unit after a nationalist World War II formation responsible for massacring around 100,000 Polish civilians. In a resolution passed on Wednesday, MEPs sided with Poland, calling the move an “unprovoked escalation,” reinforcing Warsaw’s position. “What you are doing by denying some of the atrocities that the insurgent army committed in Poland, or whitewashing, it is contrary to European values. So if you’re serious about joining the European Union, you need to change course,” Jasser said. Join News in Depth host Ashim Kumar and his guest as they discuss whether the Ankara summit will strengthen the alliance through joint weapons manufacturing, whether Putin is finally recognizing that Western support for Ukraine is enduring, and why the European Parliament’s backing of Poland may not be enough to repair the damage Zelenskyy’s decision caused in Poland. 🔴 Watch our 24/7 livestream - https://youtube.com/live/9RY46AUtIl4 Bringing you all the latest daily news and updates, TVP World is Poland's first English-language channel where you can find world news as seen from the Polish perspective and the latest news from the CEE region.
