On a technical university in Russia students asked the invited soldiers and female military activist about cases of homosexual rape in Russian army. Visibly offended, the activist replied that no such cases happen because "if our boy wants sex, he will just masturbate". The invited soldier added "you should not mistake us with our opponents", since it is a popular trope in Russian propaganda that Ukrainian soldiers are forcibly converted into homosexuality as part of "European standards" etc. In reality, homosexual rape is widely reported by Russian activists and soldiers as part of culture of humiliation and degradation that was imported into Russian army along with tens of thousands of violent prisoners who were pardoned by Putin and mobilised to reinforce the assault units. Russian leaders in general have an interesting attitude towards homosexuality - on one hand they treat voluntary gay relations with contempt as "non-traditional", but routinely use phrases such as "to bend someone over" (поставить раком) as a threat with clear homosexual rape context, so with with a clear background in prison culture.
