Netanyahu must pursue war if he wants to win the elections | Marek Magierowski

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the 15-point peace plan drafted by U.S. President Donald Trump. Is the plan really unacceptable to Israel? Or is it only unacceptable to Netanyahu ahead of the Israelis going to the polls on 27 October? “For Mr. Netanyahu, it is a primary concern and a priority to continue this war (...) because he knows very well that he depicts himself as a wartime leader, which is the most important factor and aspect of his electoral campaign today,” Marek Magierowski, former Polish Ambassador to Israel and the United States, Geopolitical Analyst for Wirtualna Polska, and Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council and the Euro-Med Middle East Council, told TVP World. As Magierowski pointed out, Israeli society has for a long time been split down the middle between the left and right, but Netanyahu’s long time in power has not contributed to his popularity. “But on the other hand, after October 7 (2023, when Hamas conducted an extensive attack on Israel) the mood in Israel has changed significantly. And there was a very characteristic shift to the right in Israeli society,” the former ambassador added, saying that without it, Netanyahu’s electoral outlook would be much bleaker, whereas now, recent polls expect his party to win – not an outright majority, which is rare in Israeli politics, but enough to form another coalition with ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties. But the wartime leader image that Netanyahu would like to cultivate also makes him a hostage to the continuation of Israel’s military action in Southern Lebanon and Gaza, because withdrawal “would deal a devastating blow to his political image in Israel today.” Join TVP World’s Ashim Kumar and his guest as they explore Hamas's contribution to keeping the conflict alive, how the U.S. war in Iran is eroding Washington’s standing with its Middle Eastern allies, and how Tehran’s strategy of shifting the fight into the economic arena is putting growing pressure on U.S. President Trump at home.
