In June 2014, a Russian activist in the Ukrainian town of Makiivka complained to a small gathering that 'nobody wants to fight for our republic', criticising the lack of volunteers willing to fight for Russia. However, the primary problem for the Russians in Donbas was that, immediately after Igor Girkin's Spetsnaz team infiltrated the border in April, they revealed their true intentions. They did not bring the higher pensions and salaries that Putin had promised; instead, they started looting, taking over businesses, and executing those who were sceptical of their rule. Naturally, the local population wasn't particularly eager to die for common gangsters.
