Zhuravel then mysteriously disappeared from Volgograd detention centre and reappeared in Chechnya, where he was used as a punch bag by Chechnya's ruling class. Russian law enforcement ignored reports about beating of Zhuravel who, after all, is a Russian citizen. In March 2026 Russian human rights activists reported that Zhuravel disappeared from the Russian prison system, possibly being simply extrajudicially executed.
