Bizarre Stalin advertisement by Alexey Kostylev

Russian prosecutors have detained Alexey Kostylev, the owner of the 'patriotic' Russian media outlet Readovka, always supportive of war in Ukraine. In the past Kostylev recorded a bizarre video in which he praised Stalin while walking through the ruins of Severodonetsk in a uniform reminiscent of Stalin's and threatened Aleksandr Shtefanov, a moderately anti-war Russian film director, calling him a 'traitor'. Kostylev has now been charged with stealing $1 million from the Ministry of Defence — a charge that is likely to be true given the scale of theft and corruption within the Russian army. Other Russian 'patriots', clearly concerned about their own 'business enterprises' within army circles, have started appealing to the authorities to stop the prosecution of Kostylev on humanitarian grounds. They claim that, following an accident in 2024, his health is so poor that keeping him in a detention facility would be equivalent to capital punishment. It is interesting to note that the conditions in Russian prisons, including abuse, torture, and the denial of medical care, were never a concern for them when it came to opposition figures such as Alexei Navalny.
