Putin delivering a speech about... socks

Putin wanted to boost the morale of his audience and, as usual, started making the kind of incoherent historical references for which he is so well known. This time, he seized the opportunity to spin the failure of the German army at Stalingrad, claiming that the city was conquered because German housewives did not send their soldiers warm socks, unlike the Soviets, and that's why they won. The idea behind this rather poor parable is that Russian society must mobilise and make more sacrifices to help their army win the war. However, the fundamental difference is that the Soviet army was defending against a German invasion in Stalingrad, whereas the Russian army is invading a sovereign country for the fifth consecutive year. To complete the analogy, it is now the Ukrainians who are running tireless crowdfunding campaigns to support their defence forces — and they are working. This appeal comes at a time when many Russian military activists are complaining that donations to the army have dropped dramatically in 2025. This is understandable — nobody, not even Putin, has told the Russian people why they are fighting this war and what its goals are.
