The teenager, who spent her entire life in Oleshky in the Kherson region, on the other side of the Dnipro River from the regional capital, was quickly overrun by the Russians. Liza recounted the summer of 2022, when the occupation authorities offered free summer camps for children from areas under their control. She remembers that the Russians ferried as many as 20 buses filled with kids from across the river through her town every day. When Ukrainian forces liberated Kherson in November of that year, many children had not yet returned home. Liza does not hold back when she says what she thinks about the parents desperate to retrieve their offspring. “You handed over your children yourselves. You knew where you were sending them. You knew that the Russian authorities and the Russians were there, and you still sent your children to those camps. And now you tell us that you are crying and grieving because no one will return your children.
