On News in Depth, Marcin Zaborowski, Europe Editor at TVP World, argued that the crisis is the result of several overlapping factors. One of them is Spain’s migration policy, which is among the most liberal in Europe. At the same time, Zaborowski stressed that Spain is not the only country facing migration pressure. However, he argued that it is the only EU member state actively pursuing policies that may encourage migrants to come. This remains particularly controversial given that Spain is part of the Schengen Area. Nevertheless, Zaborowski believes claims about the “beginning of the end” of Schengen are exaggerated. He pointed out that border controls have been temporarily reintroduced on several occasions in recent years, including during the migration crisis of 2015, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.
