An example of carefully orchestrated propaganda on Russian state television, directed by and featuring Vladimir Solovyov. This 2019 recording features the pro-Russian Polish ‘scholar’ Jakub Korejba, who lived in Russia for several years and appeared on programmes of this kind, playing the stereotypical ‘Polish Russophobe’. In this particular programme, Korejba’s task was to touch upon one of the highly sensitive topics in Russia, namely Soviet-Nazi collaboration between 1939 and 1941. During those years, the USSR enabled Nazi Germany to circumvent the Western economic blockade and continue its invasion of Western Europe, and, in effect, to prepare for an invasion of the USSR itself. This issue is extremely controversial in modern Russia and is usually passed over in silence. In this instance, Soloviev’s role is to demonstrate to the Russian public the correct and expected response to such allegations, namely, no engagement with the facts, but simply shouting down the opponent. Instead of responding substantively to the historically accurate assessment of events presented by Koreiba, Solovyov employs a classic tactic of Russian propaganda, namely drowning out his argument with a far more serious – albeit completely untrue – accusation: that ‘the Poles murdered most of the Jews during the occupation’. In reality, during the Second World War, over 5.8 million Polish civilians were murdered, of whom around 3 million were of Jewish ethnicity. Individual Polish collaboration with the German occupiers was never established at the state level, as was the case in other European countries, and denouncing Jews or Poles hiding Jews was punishable by death under the Polish Underground State. The staff of concentration camps and death camps on the territory of occupied Poland consisted almost exclusively of Germans; the prisoners – including Poles, Jews and Soviet prisoners of war – served there merely as a labour force exploited under German supervision for the worst kinds of work, such as removing corpses from the gas chambers. However, Koreiba and Soloviev’s role in this programme is not to seek out historical truth, but merely to act out a scene depicting a model discussion of the sort the Russian public might encounter in everyday live debates and online, along with a model and politically correct reaction to it from the perspective of Russian historical policy.
