Not shifting NATO’s forces east a long time ago was a mistake | Col. Ray Wojcik (ret)

Permanent U.S. military presence in Poland appears closer than ever, as top-level officials, including the presidents of both countries, meet to hammer out the details. The talks come as Russia acts increasingly aggressively toward NATO’s European members on the alliance’s eastern flank. “In my view, when NATO began to enlarge – and clearly the security situation moved to the east – we made a mistake, as NATO and the United States, by not moving forces east,” retired U.S. Army Col. Ray Wojcik, now a Senior Research Fellow with The Saratoga Foundation, “Instead, we were reaping the peace dividend and (...) in the case of the United States, reducing and moving troops out of Europe.” Wojcik said that “Poland is certainly the model ally in showing what it takes and what it looks like when we’re talking about how do we shift the burden to European allies,” by treating the expansion of its military seriously, and added that while it is clear that “there's a special place in President Trump's heart for Poland,” the U.S. realizes that it needs to “harden our perimeter” on the eastern flank of the alliance in general. Join TVP World’s Ashim Kumar and his guest as they explore why Poland is emerging as the key hub for NATO’s eastern-flank defense, whether a permanent U.S. military presence can strengthen deterrence against Russia, and how the Alliance should respond to increasingly aggressive Russian hybrid attacks and provocations below the threshold of conventional war.
