https://video.echelon.pl/videos/watch/9c87be10-fa74-4988-b7de-bad152b8d256 Ursula von der Leyen’s latest State of the European Union address, delivered before the European Parliament on Wednesday, presented a Europe preparing for growing geopolitical risks. “The key thing I would say is this kind of pronounced strategic autonomy – that buzzword we see in Brussels all the time – really coming front and center on all issues of those priorities,” said TVP World’s Chief International Correspondent Alex Cadier. “Of course, what I mean by strategic autonomy is that the European Union should not and cannot depend on other places, other partners, other countries that they cannot trust or rely on.” “The concern from European countries, expressed by the president of the European Commission, is that the U.S. is becoming an increasingly volatile, unreliable partner, if not to say hostile at times, Cadier said. “So if that’s the case, do you really want to just depend on the United States for the weapons that you buy, for the nuclear umbrella, for the protection in case of a big attack under NATO’s Article 5? The answer clearly is ‘no.’” “We have to have cooperation, better security partnership with those countries which are more like-minded,” exemplified by von der Leyen’s invitation for Canada to become the EU’s first associate member, saying that “We see the world through the same eyes.” In part, “because Canada is under pressure from the United States,” engaged in a trade war started by Donald Trump’s administration, but also because it possesses critical raw materials, rare earths, and refining expertise the EU lacks. Cadier noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and von der Leyen “both said this is not a partnership against anyone, but it is certainly a partnership in the context of conflict with the U.S. right now.” “They don’t want to have the U.S. and China bullying everybody else and having a kind of binary, bipolar world,” TVP World’s Chief International Correspondent said.
