According to Lucas, the main political beneficiaries are populist movements that use migration as a tool to win support from voters. “Russia has been using the issues of migration, asylum seekers and refugees for years to undermine the stability of European societies,” Lucas argues. He says Alexander Lukashenko has followed a similar strategy. In his view, the Kremlin benefits from the growing popularity of populist parties, many of which show greater understanding toward Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
