But in Podlasie, eastern Poland, some of the most remarkable and least visited traces of Jewish life in Europe are waiting to be discovered. Podlasie is home to significant and little-known Jewish heritage sites, from historic synagogues to the last traces of communities destroyed during the Holocaust. We begin in Orla, where the village mayor is working to restore a 17th-century synagogue that stood abandoned for decades after the Holocaust. Next, we explore the broader story of Podlasie's Jewish past, a region where Jews, Catholics, Orthodox Christians and Muslims lived side by side long before the idea of multiculturalism existed. We then travel to Tykocin, where the Great Synagogue hosts the Tiktiner Festival, bringing Jewish classical music back into a space once central to Jewish life. Finally, we return to Warsaw, where the Polish National Opera closes its season with Barbara Wysocka's new production of Romeo and Juliet, reimagining Shakespeare's story in a divided modern world.
