A unique two-month operation carried out early last year, which had not previously been disclosed, led to the destruction of the Konka Bridge, which spanned the Dnipro River in the occupied part of the Kherson region. It connected the left bank with the river islands, which were used to launch attacks on residential areas of Kherson. For months, Ukrainian forces had tried to destroy the bridge with aerial bombs and HIMARS strikes, but without success — bridges are relatively easy to destroy from below, but from the outside they are extremely sturdy. The breakthrough came when a Russian soldier posted a photo of himself on Instagram standing beneath the bridge’s supports, revealing its structural vulnerabilities. The Ukrainians developed a 50-kg shaped-charge warhead that could be lowered by cable onto the bridge’s identified weakest points. Over 60 days, the British Malloy T-150 drone made 30 sorties, delivering a total of 1.5 tonnes of explosives. The final missile strike destroyed the bridge. The drone’s technical specifications were a key component of the mission. Thanks to protection against GPS jamming, a motor with no thermal signature and a low acoustic profile, it was able to approach the bridge undetected. Russia still controls the islands on the Dnipro, but without the bridge it has to supply its positions by boat, which are easy targets for Ukrainian drones.
