Transitional periods are nothing new when it comes to EU membership, one example being restrictions on freedom of employment following the 2004 expansion. But will restricting the right to veto for new members solve the problem that was made so apparent by Orbán? “For many years, Viktor Orbán was a center-right politician. He turned anti-European extremist Moscow lover only after 2014. So that is about ten years into Hungarian membership in the Union,” Piotr Maciej Kaczyński, EU Institutional Issues Lecturer at the University of Warsaw, told TVP World, further pointing out that “There is no guarantee that any government out there of a new country entering the Union is going to behave, so to speak, forever.” “We also do not have that guarantee (for) the French government or (for) the Italian government or (for) the Bulgarian government either,” he also added.
