On 8-9 January 2026 Russia launched a large-scale missile strikes on Kyiv, damaging thermal power plants TPP-4, TPP-5 and TPP-6. The attack on Kyiv was carried out using 'Kalibr' and 'Iskander' cruise missiles, preceded by a raid of 'Geran' kamikaze drones. Up to 12 ballistic missiles, about 25 'Kalibr' missiles and over 200 drones were launched at Kyiv. Russian missiles also damaged a number of residential buildings causing civilian casualties. In one case Russians applied a 'double-tap' attack hitting precisely the same residential building after a short pause, targeting the first responders. The attack on Lviv was conducted presumably using 'Oreshnik' ballistic missile which targeted the town's energy infrastructure and gas storage, trying to use very low winter temperatures as means to terrorise civilians.
