<description>Who is manipulating political conversations ahead of elections? In this episode of Anatomy of Disinformation, host Maia Mazurkiewicz investigates how coordinated bot networks, AI-generated content and foreign influence operations exploit social media to deepen political divisions and undermine trust in democracy. The episode explores how Russia-linked influence networks recycle fabricated stories and AI-generated videos across countries, how an Iranian-linked network of fake Israeli personas seeks to exploit divisions ahead of Israel’s elections, and why the objective of foreign interference may be less about supporting a particular candidate and more about weakening public trust. In the latest episode, we asked two experts for their views on the issue: Richard Schwenn is the Head of Data and AI at Polisphere and a researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering at the University of Potsdam. He analyses disinformation campaigns and coordinated online manipulation, including operations targeting Germany’s 2026 regional elections and the recycling of the same tactics across different countries. Prof. Yaniv Roznai is Co-Chair of the Israeli Section of ICON-S, Professor and Vice Dean at Reichman University’s Harry Radziner Law School, and Co-Director of the Rubinstein Center for Constitutional Challenges. His research focuses on comparative constitutional law, democratic backsliding, populism and political polarisation. We also discuss deepfakes, election integrity, platform accountability and the challenges of protecting democratic debate in an era of increasingly sophisticated online manipulation.
