Saying the people are against the project spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner would be oversimplifying it. What motivates the protesters goes much deeper. The reigns of power in Albania have been held by “a very stagnant political elite (...) for many, many, many years. They change seats. Sometimes they’re in the government, sometimes they're in the opposition,” said TVP World’s Natalia Komarow, who travelled to Albania to report on the protests. The protesters “are demanding a complete change of political establishment. (...) This is not something that happens overnight. These new elites need to be formed. Maybe they’re being formed right now on the streets. I think what we see is a civil society being born there,” Komarow added.
