Rail Baltica and military mobility on NATO's Eastern Flank | Special Report

The Rail Baltica project comes with enormous expectations. Originally designed as a transport corridor linking key cities across Eastern Europe, its strategic importance changed dramatically after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, European transport priorities have increasingly shifted toward strengthening connections with the Baltic states. The project is intended to bring Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania closer to the rest of Europe not only in terms of transportation, but also in strategic and security terms. That is particularly important because, from a geographical perspective, the Baltic states could be relatively easily isolated during a crisis, at least for a certain period of time. At the same time, the project faces serious challenges, including rising construction costs, inflation, funding gaps, and delays. Despite these hurdles, supporters insist that Rail Baltica has become one of Europe's most important strategic infrastructure projects and a key component of Baltic and European security. In this Special Report, Zuzanna Jurek, Defense Correspondent at TVP World, explains why Rail Baltica matters not only for transportation, but also for the future security of the Baltic states, NATO, and Europe as a whole.
