UKRAINE TO HOLD OFF LONG-RANGE STRIKES IF RUSSIA AVOIDS MASS ATTACKS
Ukraine will hold off on its "long-range sanctions," or deep long-range strikes on Russia, if Moscow continues to avoid launching mass attacks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address on Sunday.

LATVIAN DEFENSE MINISTER RESIGNS AFTER DRONE BREACH DAMAGES OIL TANKS
Latvia’s defense minister has resigned after Ukrainian drones breached the country’s airspace and damaged several oil storage tanks. The move follows an investigation ordered by the prime minister, which found delays in activating the country’s air defense response.

Russia has violated the U.S.-brokered three-day Victory Day ceasefire with attacks across the country, according to Ukrainian officials.

Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin said on Saturday he thought the war in Ukraine is coming to an end. He also suggested that he was ready for direct talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, though he also mentioned several preconditions for this meeting to take place.

Nearly 400 firefighters and emergency crews were deployed on Saturday to control a large forest fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, in Ukraine’s Kyiv region. The fire was originally triggered by a Russian drone strike and came at a time of a major drought affecting large parts of Europe.

However, after more than four years of war in Ukraine, this year's event will reportedly be scaled down amid growing security concerns and continued Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia. Recording this episode of Ukraine This Week with less than a day to go before the Moscow parade, we discussed whether President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would respond to Putin’s celebrations with further attacks on Russian military or energy infrastructure, especially after warning that continued Russian assaults would be met with proportional retaliation, signaling an escalation in tit-for-tat strikes.

Volodymyr Dubovyk argued that Ukraine should avoid striking Red Square or the parade itself because it could damage international support for Kyiv and hand Russia a propaganda victory. He said that Ukraine’s recent drone attacks on oil refineries and other strategic targets demonstrate the effectiveness of Kyiv’s asymmetric warfare strategy while exposing Russia’s vulnerabilities and undermining its image of strength and control.
